Curriculum | Modern Languages

We have three main departments: French, Spanish and Italian. Other languages such as Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, and German are offered on a tutorial basis, depending on demand.

Our aim is to help pupils effectively communicate with people in a foreign language. Optimum use of the language is central to our approach. Pupils are assessed in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing in line with National Curriculum attainment targets.

Up to Year 9 all students study two languages: French & Spanish or French & Italian. From Year 10 most pupils concentrate on one language to GCSE.

Trips and exchanges are crucial for motivation. We try to provide all pupils with the opportunity to go on trips from the start of their school life. Such immersion in a foreign language helps pupils realise the real importance of communication skills.
